We are honoured to announce that Dr John A. Elefteriades, MD, PhD (Hon), a distinguished figure in the field of cardiothoracic surgery, has become the patron of the charity. Dr Elefteriades brings with him a wealth of experience, expertise, and a deep commitment to advancing the understanding and treatment of aortic diseases.

A Pioneering Cardiothoracic Surgeon

Dr Elefteriades holds the esteemed position of William W.L. Glenn Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Yale University. His illustrious career at Yale has spanned several decades, during which he served as Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Yale University and Yale New-Haven Hospital for fifteen years. In 2011, he became the Founding Director of the Aortic Institute at Yale, a testament to his pioneering spirit and dedication to the field.

Academic Excellence and Distinguished Career

A prodigious academic, Dr Elefteriades graduated magna cum laude from Yale University with a triple concentration in Physics, French, and Psychology. He earned his MD from the Yale University School of Medicine and completed his training in both General Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery at Yale. Upon finishing his training, he joined the faculty at Yale University School of Medicine, where he has made significant contributions to the field of cardiothoracic surgery, including heart transplantation, artificial heart implantation, and thousands of resections of thoracic aortic aneurysms.

Dr Elefteriades has held several prestigious positions, including President of the Connecticut Chapter of the American College of Cardiology, member of the Board of Governors of the American College of Cardiology, President of the International College of Angiology, and President of the Yale Surgical Society. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the medical journal AORTA, further showcasing his dedication to advancing medical knowledge and practice

Contributions to Medical Literature

In addition to his extensive contributions to medical literature, Dr Elefteriades has authored several books for the general public, including Your Heart: An Owner’s Guide, The Woman’s Heart: An Owner’s Guide, and the inspirational Extraordinary Hearts. His foray into fiction with the medical mystery/ethics thriller Transplant earned him recognition as a finalist in the Next Generation Indie Book Awards.

Dr Elefteriades’ outstanding contributions have been recognised with numerous awards, including the Walter Bleifeld Memorial Award for Distinguished Contribution in Clinical Research in Cardiology, the John B. Chang Research Achievement Award, the Socrates Award from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Distinguished Fellow Award from the International Academy of Cardiology, and the Golden Scalpel Award for resident teaching. He has also received honorary degrees from the University of Liege and the historic University of Parma, Italy, and has been inducted into the prestigious Athens Academy.
