Welsh Cardio-Thoracic Society – Annual Meeting 2024

Advocating for improved care and diagnosis for aortic dissection patients in Wales at the WCTS Annual Meeting.

The upcoming annual meeting of the Welsh Cardio-Thoracic Society (WCTS) is a crucial event for those involved in cardiac and thoracic care across Wales and beyond. The charity will be participating, representing the needs and concerns of patients and families affected by aortic dissection, a condition that requires swift diagnosis and specialised care.

The WCTS meeting brings together cardiothoracic surgeons, healthcare professionals, and key decision-makers from across Wales, the United Kingdom, and overseas. The primary goal of this event is to discuss the latest developments in the field and to work collaboratively to improve the delivery of cardiothoracic services. An essential aspect of the meeting is the involvement of stakeholders, including commissioners and planners, who play a vital role in shaping the direction of healthcare in Wales.

The charity has been instrumental in pushing for better diagnosis and education about aortic dissection in Wales. By participating in this event, we aim to ensure that the experiences and needs of patients are considered in the discussions and planning for future care strategies.

About the Welsh Cardio-Thoracic Society

The WCTS, established in 2015, serves as a collaborative body for all professionals involved in cardiac and thoracic surgery in Wales. It plays a central role in improving patient outcomes, introducing new services, and enhancing training for healthcare professionals.

The two main centres for cardiothoracic surgery in South Wales are Morriston Hospital in Swansea and the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. Both hospitals are well-equipped with specialised facilities and trained staff, providing a range of cardiac and thoracic procedures with strong outcomes. These centres also contribute to research and education, training future generations of healthcare professionals.

The charity remains committed to advocating for the needs of aortic dissection patients. By participating in this event, we aim to ensure that their voices are heard and that the healthcare system in Wales continues to improve its ability to diagnose and treat this life-threatening condition.
