King’s College London, with funding support from the charity’s research grants, is hosting a Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) webinar to inform and develop research priorities on key topics related to aortic dissection. This initiative is part of the project focused on Sex-Specific Outcomes and Health-Related Quality of Life After Aortic Dissection.
The webinar will provide an overview of the limited existing evidence in these areas and seek input from participants on future research directions.
How the Project Works
The first step is this webinar, designed to identify research gaps and priorities. A PPI Project Patient Panel will then be formed, consisting of approximately 10 individuals who will work closely with the researchers to refine and develop research proposals.
Future activities will include additional engagement sessions based on panel recommendations, a follow-up webinar for further feedback, and finalising grant applications to secure funding for the research.
Background to the Project
AD affects about 7 in 100,000 people annually, with over 500 surgical procedures performed in the UK each year – a number that is steadily increasing. Survival rates after surgery are encouraging, with over 80% of patients living for eight years or more post-operation.
As survival improves, the focus shifts to patient-reported outcomes, particularly HRQoL and psychosocial factors. These include impacts on work, social life, and mental health. Despite this, research in these areas remains extremely limited. This project seeks to address this gap, with a particular emphasis on understanding sex-specific differences and improving representation in research.
