The Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland (SCTS) is set to host its annual meeting from 17-19 March 2024. This event is one of the most significant gatherings of cardiothoracic surgeons, allied healthcare professionals, and industry representatives in the UK and Ireland.
The SCTS annual meeting provides an opportunity for medical professionals to share knowledge and learn about the latest advances in cardiothoracic surgery. The event features lectures, symposia, and workshops, as well as opportunities to network and collaborate with colleagues from around the world.
One area of focus at the upcoming SCTS annual meeting is aortic dissection, providing an opportunity for medical professionals to learn about the latest advances in research and treatment of aortic dissection.
Lunch & Learn
One of the highlights of the SCTS annual meeting is the lunch box session on aortic dissection, delivered by experts in the field in partnership with the charity. Our 2022 session discussed the Future of Aortic Care with a lively debate covering the future of surgical intervention by Professor Aung Oo, family testing by Dr Dianna M. Milewicz, and how to build the ideal multidisciplinary care team by Deborah Harrington. In 2023, we took a closer look at how that goal might be realised. Our session, sponsored by UK Aortic Surgery, titled The Future is Here: A Toolbox for Elective Aortic Dissection. With the help of specialists, we examined how we may expand on the Acute Aortic Dissection Toolkit‘s achievements by integrating vascular and cardiac surgical services to offer both an elective and an acute pathway for aortic dissection.
For SCTS 2024, we present a focused session on aortic dissection titled The Future for AD: Beyond The Toolkits; Devices & Data, featuring key discussions by experts in the field. Dr Colin Bicknell will address the management of uncomplicated acute Type B dissection, while Prof Aung Oo will explore treatment strategies for the arch in acute Type A dissection. The session will also highlight the importance of national data collection with insights from Manoj Kuduvalli and Arun Pherwani will evaluate the efficacy of Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) in providing answers to pressing questions in aortic patient care.
Patient Power in Research
In addition to the lunch and research sessions, the SCTS annual meeting features a range of workshops and symposia focused on aortic dissection. These sessions provide a forum for medical professionals to share knowledge and learn about the latest techniques and approaches to diagnosing and treating the condition.
Another key aspect of the SCTS annual meeting is the opportunity to network and collaborate with colleagues from around the world. This is particularly important in the field of aortic dissection, where collaboration and knowledge-sharing are essential to improving patient outcomes. Attendees can connect with other medical professionals who are working to improve the diagnosis and treatment of aortic dissection, as well as representatives from industry and advocacy groups.
The SCTS annual meeting is also an opportunity to highlight the importance of improving research into aortic dissection. By improving aortic research focus and funding, we can help ensure that more people receive the most effective care possible.
By sharing knowledge and expertise, we can work together to improve the treatment of aortic dissection, ultimately saving lives and improving patient outcomes.
