The Primary Care Cardiovascular Society (PCCS) hosted its 4th Spring Conference at The King’s Fund in London this month. This event brought together a diverse group of healthcare professionals to explore the complexities of managing cardiovascular diseases, with a significant emphasis on critical conditions such as aortic dissection.
Understanding the Urgency
One of the sessions at the conference was dedicated to aortic disease and priorities in cardiovascular care, specifically aortic dissection. This session aimed to equip general practitioners (GPs) with the knowledge and tools necessary to improve early detection and management of their patients.
During the session, attendees updated their knowledge on the latest advances in diagnosing, managing, and treating aortic dissection. They explored the risk factors and symptoms associated with the condition, and the importance of early signs for early detection. Discussions also included long-term management strategies for patients, such as lifestyle and ongoing medical care.

Focused Resources in Primary Care
The conference highlighted the need for targeted resources and education to close the gaps in primary care related to aortic dissection. Despite improvements in treatment, the condition remains challenging to diagnose early, often due to its nonspecific symptoms that can mimic other medical issues.
To address this, the charity has partnered with the PCCS to develop resources specifically tailored for primary care professionals. These include the Aortic Dissection Field Guide for Primary Care and comprehensive video content intended to enhance understanding and management of the condition among GPs.
Enhancing Primary Care Capabilities
Our recent collaboration also included a webinar for the South London Cardiovascular Network, reinforcing the charity’s commitment to continuous professional development in cardiovascular health. This initiative is part of our effort to ensure that primary care practitioners are well-equipped with the latest knowledge and best practices in managing cardiovascular conditions, particularly aortic dissection.
By focusing on education and resource development, we aim to bridge the gap between primary and secondary care, ensuring that GPs can effectively contribute to the early detection and management of aortic dissection. This is crucial for improving patient outcomes and reducing the burden of this severe condition.
A Comprehensive Approach to Cardiovascular Health
The PCCS 4th Spring Conference, Case Studies in Cardiovascular Disease, also covered a range of other important topics, including:
- Hypertension in the Afro-Caribbean Population: Addressing the unique challenges and strategies for managing hypertension in this demographic.
- Lipid Management: Exploring the latest guidelines and treatments for managing cholesterol and lipid levels.
- Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease: Discussing the intersection of diabetes and cardiovascular health, and the implications for patient care.
