The Artivion Cycling Challenge returned this year, with riders once again taking on the demanding roads and climbs of Mallorca in support of the charity. Over the course of three days, the team managed a tough mix of kilometres and mountain climbs, raising a remarkable £14,082 for the charity’s Aortic Nurse Funding Programme, a programme which supports the development of specialist aortic nursing and improves care for those affected by aortic dissection.
Supporting Specialist Aortic Nursing
Surviving an aortic dissection is the beginning of a lifelong adjustment. Follow-up scans, blood pressure management, medication, genetics, physical recovery and the emotional impact of what has happened all become part of life after diagnosis. Families of patients who survived, as well as those who unfortunately didn’t survive, also need information and reassurance as they adjust to what it means for the future.
Specialist aortic nurses and advanced practitioners play an important role throughout this time. They provide a point of contact for patients and families, help coordinate care and support people to better understand and manage their condition. The charity’s TADCT Aortic Nurse Funding Programme is helping to develop these roles and strengthen specialist aortic services across the UK and Ireland.
Three Days in Mallorca
Taking on Mallorca’s roads, the riders faced long distances, significant climbs and the physical challenge of returning to the saddle each morning, and we are grateful to every member of the team who trained, travelled and took part. We also thank everyone who sponsored a rider or supported them along the way. Together, the team’s contributions have created significant funding that can now be put to work for patients and families.

We greatly appreciate the continued support of Artivion, especially their European team, and the commitment shown by the surgeons involved in this year’s challenge. Industry partners play an important role in the wider aortic community. They bring expertise, resources and a shared interest in improving outcomes for people with aortic disease. Their support can also help charities extend their reach and deliver projects that make a practical difference to patients.
For the Aortic Dissection Charitable Trust, it is equally important to approach these relationships responsibly. The charity works across the aortic community and engages with a wide range of organisations and industry partners. We do not align our work exclusively with any one company. Our priorities and decisions remain independent and are guided by our charitable purpose and the needs of patients and families. We believe this approach allows us to collaborate positively with industry while maintaining the independence that patients, families, healthcare professionals and individual supporters expect from the charity.
Artivion’s continued support is greatly valued within that approach. The enthusiasm of its team and the riders involved has once again translated into meaningful support for the patient community.
From Fundraising to Better Care
The true measure of this year’s challenge will be what takes place in the future, which is the reason why challenges of this kind are so significant. There are people who suffer from aortic dissection and who need specialist advice, as well as families seeking reassurance and healthcare professionals who are working to improve long-term care.
