180 people gathered at Pride Park Stadium in Derby for the first-ever Aortic Dissection Charity Ball. It was a night of reflection, celebration and generosity, organised by the Latham family to honour the memory of Ben Latham. The event raised awareness and support for aortic dissection patients, while paying tribute to a beloved husband, father and friend.

A Warm Derbyshire Welcome

As guests arrived at the Toyota Suite, they were welcomed by the enchanting melodies of local harpist Darcy Partington. Her music set a warm and inviting tone, blending perfectly with the anticipation in the air. It was a lovely start to the evening, offering a chance to mingle and soak in the atmosphere before the night’s festivities unfolded.

The evening’s programme opened with a lively performance by the Vanessa Millar School of Dancing. Their routines brought smiles to the faces of attendees and captured the sense of community that defined the night. The dancers’ energy and enthusiasm were a touching reminder of the joy that Ben brought to those around him.

Remembering Ben Latham

At the heart of the evening was the memory of Ben Latham, a man who deeply cherished his family and community. Ben loved spending time with his wife, Tracey, and their children, Poppy and Harry, whether on family trips or simply enjoying life in their village of North Newbald. He shared a close bond with his parents, Derek and Pauline, and his siblings, Sarah and Oliver. Ben’s love for Derby County Football Club made Pride Park Stadium a fitting venue for the event, bringing together the people and places that were important to him.

Bidding for a Cause

A key part of the evening was the live auction, led by James Lewis, a well-known auctioneer from BBC’s Flog It and Bargain Hunt. His engaging style kept the audience captivated, as they bid on unique items such as a holiday in Devon, a stay at Morley Hayes, and a hairstyling session at a renowned Chelsea salon. A bespoke sculpture by Paul Cummins MBE, creator of the famous poppy installation at the Tower of London, and a signed 1981 FA Cup Final photo from Steve Perryman MBE were among the most sought-after prizes.

The atmosphere was electric as guests generously placed their bids, motivated by the shared goal of supporting a cause that had touched so many. By the end of the night, a remarkable £40,000 had been raised, a testament to the compassion and commitment of everyone present.

Messages of Support

Throughout the evening, attendees were reminded of the broader impact of their efforts. A specially recorded video featuring BBC radio presenters brought warm messages of encouragement, expressing appreciation for the charity’s work and those gathered at the event. These heartfelt words illustrated the importance of raising awareness for aortic dissection and highlighted how much support exists for those affected by this condition.

Gratitude and Generosity

The success of the evening was made possible through the support of many, particularly the event’s sponsors. Their contributions covered the essential costs of the venue, food, and entertainment, allowing every pound raised to go directly towards aortic dissection research and support for patients. The Latham family extended their heartfelt thanks to SmartParc, Resonate Group Ltd, HelloFresh, Ivygrove Group, Morley Hayes, Carter Construction, Wheeldons, Melbourne Print, Derbyshire Tea, Don Amott Leisure, Ferrero, Merchant Jewellers, and House of Blank Canvas for their generous contributions.

Dancing the Night Away

As the formalities drew to a close, the cover band Boss & Co. took to the stage, filling the room with classic hits that got everyone up and dancing. From the first song to the last, the dance floor was a place of joy and connection. The music brought people together, a reminder of how shared moments can provide comfort even in difficult times.

Looking to the Future

For the Latham family, the evening was a meaningful way to honour Ben’s memory while contributing to a cause that will save lives in the future.

The Aortic Dissection Charity Ball was a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when people come together for a shared purpose. It highlighted the strength of community, the importance of remembrance, and the value of supporting those in need. The Latham family, alongside the charity, extend their gratitude to everyone who attended, donated, or supported the event in any way.

This first charity ball leaves a lasting impression, not only for the funds raised but for the sense of unity it fostered. It stands as a reminder of the difference that collective compassion can make, and the hope is that this event will inspire further support and awareness in the years to come.
