For many people, travel insurance is an afterthought when booking a holiday. But if you’ve experienced an aortic dissection or are undergoing monitoring or testing for a related condition, it should be one of the first things you consider. The type of cover you need and the destinations you can safely and affordably travel to may be shaped by your health, so planning ahead is essential.

Can I get travel insurance with an aortic condition?

Yes, it is possible to get travel insurance with an aortic condition, including after aortic aneurysm or aortic dissection or surgery. As long as your doctor has confirmed that you are fit to travel, you can look for policies designed for people with pre-existing medical conditions. These policies can include vital protections such as emergency medical treatment, hospital care abroad, or even emergency repatriation to the UK.

It’s important to be completely honest with insurers about your medical history. Disclose all past and current conditions so your cover is valid and tailored to your specific needs. A properly chosen policy can also cover cancellations, flight delays, and loss of belongings, offering full peace of mind while you’re away.

Expert Guide

To help patients navigate the complexities of travel insurance, the charity partnered with the British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA) to produce a dedicated Insurance Guide. This guide provides essential information for those affected by aortic dissection and associated genetic conditions such as Loeys-Dietz, Marfan, Ehlers-Danlos, Noonan, and Turner syndromes.

During our “Ask the Experts” webinar, Richard, a type A dissection patient, shared his personal experience of securing insurance. Graeme Trudgill, CEO of BIBA, explained that while aortic dissection is a serious condition, it should not automatically result in higher premiums or the refusal of cover – especially when the condition is well-managed and properly disclosed.

BIBA connects patients with brokers who understand complex medical needs, working with over 1,800 regulated firms across the UK. Their advice: choose your travel destination carefully, be prepared with your medical records, and use an insurer familiar with high-risk conditions.

Your holiday should be a time to unwind, reconnect, and make lasting memories. While it’s tempting to focus on the fun aspects of travel, taking the time to arrange the right travel insurance will help ensure your trip is safe, secure, and stress-free.
