Acute Aortic Dissection (AAD) NHS Toolkit

An NHS-branded image promoting the "Acute Aortic Dissection Toolkit." The NHS logo is prominently displayed in bold white text on a blue background, with the title of the toolkit written below in black and red text, highlighting "Aortic Dissection."

The Aortic Dissection Charitable Trust is excited to have been part of the design and launch of the NHS England and NHS Improvement’s Emergency Acute Aortic Dissection (AAD) Toolkit. This initiative will significantly improve the pathway for patients with acute aortic dissection and has the potential to save 500 lives every year once it is implemented by every region in the UK.

We had a tremendous amount of constructive and positive feedback on the acute AD toolkit developed by patients as part of the aortic dissection research panel. NHS England has been astonished by the response of the charity’s supporters stating that this has been one of their most successful patient and public involvements.

The toolkit, designed for the medical community, was released on 14th March 2022 and is available on the Futures NHS platform. The aortic dissection charity is now a partner in the rollout and implementation of the NHS toolkit to regions across the UK.

Why the acute aortic dissection toolkit has been developed?

Dissection requires rapid diagnosis and management to prevent death. There is additional complexity because patients are often admitted under a variety of specialities because of initial misdiagnosis. Regional pathways for patients with acute aortic dissection are often unclear.

This toolkit describes seven key principles and actions to improve care for emergency acute aortic dissection patients. The toolkit has been designed to be both engaging and useful – to effectively meet the needs of both the clinicians and commissioners, and ultimately improve patient care and outcomes.

Explanation of the toolkit recorded during its design.
