This year, the trust had set aside a fund dedicated to the pump-priming of appropriate research projects. Initially, the scheme was established to support projects for one year, with the overarching objective of refining the clinical care of patients, saving lives, and enhancing the quality of life for those affected by aortic dissection.
We extend our gratitude to all members of the multidisciplinary team and researchers involved in the care of patients with aortic dissection who submitted their applications. The evaluation process has been completed, and we are pleased to announce the recipients of the 2024 awards.

Early-Stage Research Support
For researchers in the initial stages of an idea, the Research Advisory Group (RAG) welcomes early discussions to help shape and refine your project. Engaging with the RAG at this stage can provide valuable guidance, assisting you in developing your proposal and enhancing the clarity and focus of your application.
We encourage prospective applicants to make an initial, plain-English presentation to the RAG, allowing for constructive feedback early in the process. This approach benefits both applicants and RAG members by ensuring that proposals are clear, impactful, and well-aligned with the objectives of advancing aortic dissection research. Why we need research
Aortic dissection is frequently perceived as an uncommon condition with a poor prognosis that only a select group of medical professionals can treat. When someone has an acute aortic dissection, they have a 50% chance of survival before they get to hospital, and by 2050, the number of people with this problem is expected to double. Every year, the same number of people get an aortic dissection as get a brain tumour, and 7% of people who have a cardiac arrest outside of the hospital do so because of an aortic dissection.
While only a few medical specialists can treat patients with acute dissections, a wide range of healthcare professionals may see patients who have an aortic dissection or are at risk. Often aortic dissection patients are seen by cardiac and vascular surgeons, pre-hospital physicians, emergency care, acute medicine, cardiology, and general practitioners.
A key to improving the outcomes for patients with aortic dissection is through research and pathway development.
The Aortic Dissection Charitable Trust is involved in the development of the strategy to support aortic dissection research in the UK and Ireland as well as providing pump-priming research grants with an overall goal of improving patient care, saving lives, and making life better for people with aortic dissection. Those who care for patients with aortic dissection as part of a multidisciplinary team or as researchers are encouraged to apply.
Grants are made to individuals and research teams working within the NHS (UK), Health Service Executive (Republic of Ireland) or a university registered with the appropriate regulator in the UK or Republic of Ireland.
