We are incredibly grateful to Artivion for supporting patients living with aortic dissection. Over the next few days, they take on an incredible cycling challenge. Eighteen cardiac and vascular surgeons from across Europe are riding to raise money for a cause that truly matters: improving follow-up care for aortic dissection patients.
The man that worked endlessly with his team to save my life on the 26th of June 2019 at St Thomas’s is raising money for my favourite charity.
Good Luck PK I know you are gonna smash it 🙌🏻
Their goal is to raise £20,000. The funds will go directly to support specialist nurses funded by the Charity. These Aortic Dissection Advanced Practitioners focus on the long-term care of patients and their families after an aortic dissection. This includes annual scans, lifestyle advice, genetic counselling and emotional support. These nurses care for the whole patient, not just their physical recovery.
From Operating Theatre to Open Roads
Many of the surgeons taking part in the ride have treated patients, supporters of the charity’s work. Among the team is Martin. In 2020, Martin suffered a type A aortic dissection. Since then, he has worked hard to recover his health and fitness. He is now joining the ride as a key member of the team. It will be a powerful and emotional journey for all.
Care Beyond the Hospital
Artivion is proud to support this important cause. Their work focuses on the health of the entire aorta. They develop medical technologies that support patients with complex aortic conditions. But they also understand that medical devices alone are not enough. Patients need consistent follow-up care. They need to know someone is there for them in the months and years after surgery. The nurses funded through this challenge will provide that support, helping to prevent complications, giving patients a better chance of long-term recovery. These Advanced Practitioners will also support families who are often left in the dark after a loved one survives a dissection.
In the UK alone, more than 20,000 people live with this condition. Despite this, many receive no long-term care after leaving hospital. With Artivion’s support, this fundraising challenge aims to change that. By supporting the training and placement of specialist nurses, we can ensure more people get the care they deserve.
Three Days, Three Routes, One Mission
The Artivion Cycling Challenge takes place over three days. The team will ride through the Tramuntana Mountains in Mallorca. It is a scenic but demanding route.
- Day 1: The ride begins with a 41.8 km warm-up along the Cap Formentor route. Riders will follow the winding coastal road to the lighthouse and back. It is a stunning introduction to the challenge.
- Day 2: The team will take on a much tougher route. They will cycle 103.1 km from Puerto Pollensa to Sa Calobra and back. This includes some of the most famous climbs in Mallorca. The roads are steep and narrow, but the views are unforgettable.
- Day 3: The final ride covers 120.7 km from Andratx to Puerto Pollensa. It includes the legendary Puig Major climb. This is a 13.9 km uphill route that will test every rider’s endurance and determination.
Every kilometre ridden is for a purpose. Every donation will help us place more specialist nurses in roles that matter. These nurses will offer not only medical support but also hope and reassurance. They will be there for patients during the long journey of recovery.
We are deeply thankful to everyone taking part in this challenge. And we are grateful to every person who donates. Your support helps build a future where no aortic dissection patient is left behind.
