Improve Aortic Dissection Care in the UK, Europe and Beyond

Catherine Fowler shares her journey from personal loss to leading a national campaign for improved aortic dissection care, highlighting the critical role of early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment.

Dr. John Elefteriades, a prominent figure in cardiothoracic surgery, hosts an essential event aimed at advancing aortic dissection care. The event’s highlight will be a keynote address by Catherine Fowler, a trustee of the Aortic Dissection Charitable Trust, titled Triumph out of Tragedy: A Daughter’s Quest to Improve Aortic Dissection Care in the UK, Europe, and Beyond. This presentation promises valuable insights into patient advocacy, healthcare policy, and the critical importance of early diagnosis and treatment of aortic dissection.

Catherine’s Advocacy

Catherine Fowler’s advocacy journey began with a personal loss when her father died of an aortic dissection in 2015. This event propelled her into action, leading to the launch of a national campaign in 2017 focused on enhancing diagnostic rates and raising awareness about aortic dissection in emergency medicine across the UK and Ireland.

Recognising the need for comprehensive care, Catherine played a pivotal role in founding the Aortic Dissection Charitable Trust in 2020, aiming to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and overall care for aortic dissection patients, providing support across the entire treatment pathway. The charity has become instrumental in funding research and fostering a community for patients, survivors, and their families.

Recognition and Future Endeavours

Catherine’s efforts were acknowledged with the British Citizen Award for Services to Healthcare, underscoring her significant impact on healthcare policy and patient care. As TADCT’s co-founder and chair, she continues to influence healthcare policy, particularly within NHS England, advocating for enhanced patient care and support systems.

This event offers an invaluable opportunity for healthcare professionals, patients, and the general public to gain deeper insights into aortic dissection. Catherine Fowler’s story and work highlight the transformative power of informed advocacy and the importance of community and support in the face of medical challenges.
