Kickstart 2025 with an exhilarating plunge at the New Year’s Day Swim, now celebrating its 13th year of invigorating cold-water tradition at Dock 9, MediaCityUK. This event invites swimmers and dippers alike to brave the iconic Manchester waters, with a backdrop of the Lowry Theatre adding to the unforgettable experience. This year’s swim is extra special as all funds raised will be donated to The Aortic Dissection Charitable Trust in memory of Phil, who tragically lost his life to an undiagnosed aortic dissection.
Participants can choose between a 250m course for seasoned swimmers (towfloats required) or a 100m dip for those wanting a taste of the thrill without the towfloat requirement. Expect temperatures around 7°C, making this a truly refreshing way to start the year! Join friends, family, and fellow cold-water enthusiasts to celebrate life, resilience, and community – all for an important cause.
Organised by Uswim with lead coach Karen, who is personally affected by aortic dissection in her family, this event brings awareness to early detection and life-saving research. So, whether you’re an experienced open-water swimmer or just looking to embrace the New Year with a splash, come along and make a difference.
While we encourage everyone to support this incredible event and its cause, we must emphasise that cold-water swimming is not advised for individuals with a history of aortic dissection or those at risk. The extreme cold can cause a significant elevation in blood pressure, increasing the risk of complications. We urge anyone unsure of their suitability to participate to consult their doctor beforehand.
