Sharon Sewell  1970 – 2024

The community of Derby, and indeed all who had the privilege to cross paths with Sharon Sewell, find themselves reflecting on the remarkable journey of a woman whose life was a testament to resilience, compassion, and unwavering dedication to others. Sharon, a cherished member within the aortic dissection community and an inspiration of hope for many patients, leaves behind a legacy that is both inspiring and deeply moving.

Service and Strength

Sharon’s career, defined by her roles as a magistrate and dedicated Derby City Council worker, was rooted in a deep commitment to service. However, it was her personal warmth, her unmistakable smile that could truly light up any room, and her innate ability to connect with people that set her apart. Sharon was a friend, a confidante, and, to many, a source of unwavering support.

The path of Sharon’s life took an unexpected and challenging turn in January 2021, with the diagnosis of a type A aortic dissection. This medical crisis thrust her into a turmoil of surgeries and complications, ultimately leading to paraplegia. Yet, even in the face of these profound challenges, Sharon’s spirit remained determined. Her journey through prolonged hospital stays and rigorous rehabilitation was marked by a determination that inspired all who met her.

Beyond Adversity

Sharon’s involvement with The Aortic Dissection Charitable Trust was a demonstration of her innate desire to support and uplift others. Despite her own struggles, she dedicated herself to raising awareness about aortic dissection, offering solace, advice, and support to those affected by this condition. Sharon’s efforts were driven not by obligation, but by a heartfelt understanding of the fears and challenges faced by patients living with aortic dissection.

The 2024 ‘Stand with Sharon’ campaign, initiated by her friends and family to support her need for a Stand Up Wheelchair, represents the profound impact Sharon had on those around her. This initiative focused by a collective desire to support a woman who had devoted her life to helping others, now in her time of need. Sharon’s family will now donate the money collected during this campaign to charity.

Trustees’ Reflection – The Enduring Impact of Sharon Sewell

Although the circumstances leading to our paths crossing were not ones that we would have chosen, it was the greatest of privileges to know Sharon. We are so proud to have known her and to have been a small part of her life.

We will greatly miss Sharon and will keep her memory alive. Her voice and impact will live on through the charity’s work and will continue to bring all her passion to help many others.

We are so proud that Sharon was an ambassador for TADCT, and she is a shining example to us all with her gracious and natural ability to give to others despite the challenges that the world gave her.

The world will shine less brightly without you, Sharon.
